Fola’s story

Fola took a courageous step, moving to the UK with the help of her mother, whom she hadn’t seen in many years. She settled into the England’s Lane temporary accommodation with her young son, who is nearly two, and faced the daily challenge of balancing childcare while she searched for employment.

Despite the uncertainty, Fola was determined to create a better future for herself and her son. She worked with the Winch, attending mother and baby classes and parenting workshops, and slowly began to rebuild her confidence and sense of direction.

Fola’s aspiration was to one day become a nurse and she has worked hard to pursue that dream. She is now training to become a mental health nurse, combining her care for others with insights from her own lived experience. Fola’s journey is one of resilience, growth and determination. Her strength and courage inspire us all.

She has now moved out of temporary accommodation, living independently and her son is thriving in their new space.

Fola offers words of wisdom to other women facing similar challenges: “You are not alone. There are people who can help you. Remember the importance of self-care and looking after yourself.”
