Welcome to Belsize Community Library, your space to read, create and connect.

In 2012 The Winch took over the Belsize Community Library from Camden Council, who were on the verge of closing it down. People in the area have been fundraising, protesting and trying to keep the library open as a public space since the 1980s. It was clearly important to keep it as a library, so that’s exactly what The Winch has done. Today it is still the beautiful Belsize Park space that it has been since it was built in 1937. We have kept it open and welcoming to everyone in the local community and beyond!

Become a Member

Becoming a member is is easy and free. You can do it in person at the library or you can download and fill in this form here. Make sure you bring proof of address to the library you and as soon as you have your membership number you can borrow books, reserve or renew them, use our computer and more.

As we are an independent library we can’t accept Camden Library cards.

We Read

We run lots of activities here but most importantly we are still a library. We have a range of classic and exciting new books for all ages. Whatever your interest, there’s something to read and we loan around 130 books per month. Maybe it’s your first reading experience or you’re just learning. You might be an adult who wants to discover new authors. We invite you to do that here – we’ve got lots of books to help you on your reading journey.

The Belsize Community Library welcomes children and families for most of the day and we don’t mind if it gets a bit noisy!

However, from 12-3pm we have quiet time to let our readers get into their books without too much noise to distract them.

We Create

All our visitors can be creative and it’s fun! Come and explore what you can do you’re your creative potential. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never done it before – you could learn new skills. We welcome everyone of all ages to take a break from your normal routine, step inside the library to meet new people and do something creative.

If you’re a member you can use one of our two computers to develop your IT skills or join one of our over 60s IT classes. Some of our events are creative writing classes, games, open mic nights and Little Artists’ Club. Check out our full calendar of events to see how you can get creative with us.

We Connect

We have lots of events on where you can meet new people whatever your age. There’s Rhyme Time in different languages for babies and toddlers and story time after school for children of all ages and parents. There’s chess and board games for 8+, English conversation classes and the monthly Banned Book Club for adults where you’ll have the rebel’s reading experience, with books that have been banned here and in other countries. Look at our events calendar for the full list of what’s on!

We rely on volunteers to help keep us open and it’s a wonderful opportunity for you to meet new people. If you’re interested in volunteering, you can pop in to speak to our Library Manager to find out how you can get involved.

You can keep up with what’s on at the library by following us on twitter or instagram, or by signing up for our email newsletter.
