We are delighted to announce that it has won the Community Heritage Award at this year’s Locality Awards. The national award supported by Historic England celebrates community organisations that have revitalised heritage buildings or spaces to enrich the lives of their local community.
Built in 1937 by H.A. Gold and R. de W. Aldridge, Belsize Community Library is a rare example of inter-war design, valued for its elegant simplicity and open-plan layout. Rescued from closure in 2012 by the Winch, a local charity supporting children and families, the library remains a cherished hub. Honouring its heritage, the Winch has kept it a thriving community space where residents connect, learn, and take part in everything from baby groups to music nights celebrating books and community.
Today, Belsize Community Library welcomes around 10,000 visits a year, reflecting its role as an accessible, inclusive space for all ages. It operates as a public library three days a week, with a lively programme of events and activities co-created with the community from baby classes to the weekly ‘Crafternoon’. Resident-curated collections of Hong Kong and Ukrainian books further reflect the library’s diverse community spirit.
Situated on Antrim Road, our library serves as a vibrant community centre, hosting diverse activities for all ages, from baby classes to martial arts and crafts.
