Banned Book Club: By Grand Central Station I Sat Down And Wept
21 August, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Belsize Community Library’s own book club looks at literature through the lens of censorship.
Every third Wednesday of the month, at 7pm, we meet to discuss a different banned book. Some have been banned by censors in the UK, some by other governments or organisations. Why were these books banned? What effect did it have on the book’s reception and the wider society that banned it? What relevance does the book have to us?
For each session we invite a guest participant whose area of expertise will help us to appreciate the book – not just as a document of censorship, but on its own literary merits.
This month’s book club book is By Grand Central Station I Sat Down And Wept by Elizabeth Smart. It’s a prose poetry classic, an intense reading experience, and was banned in her native Canada due to the political influence of her powerful family. Poet Charlotte Geater will be joining us to talk about prose poetry, women writers, and the writing of emotions.
Why not pick up a copy and join us on Wednesday 21st to discuss this work of astonishing emotional power?
