Banned Book Club!
18 December, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Belsize Community Library’s own book club looks at literature through the lens of censorship.
Usually on the third Wednesday of every month, at 7pm, we meet to discuss a different banned book. Some have been banned by censors in the UK, some by other governments or organisations. Why were these books banned? What effect did it have on the book’s reception and the wider society that banned it? What relevance does the book have to us?
For each session we invite a guest participant whose area of expertise will help us to appreciate the book – not just as a document of censorship, but on its own literary merits.
This week we will be discussing Northern Lights by Philip Pullman, the first novel in the his Dark Materials series. Wildly popular, and the source of a major Hollywood film and now a BBC television series, it has nevertheless been banned in various schools in the US due to the author’s strong stance against religion.
