Welcome to Belsize Community Library, your space to Read, Create and Connect.

In 2012 The Winch took over the Belsize Community Library from Camden Council, who were on the verge of closing it down. It was clearly important to keep it as a library, and that’s exactly what The Winch has done. Today it remains the beautiful Belsize Park space that it has been since it was built in 1937. We welcome everyone in the local community and beyond!

Become a Member. Becoming a member is easy and free. You can do it in person at the library or you can download and fill in this form here. Please bring proof of address with you to the library.

As we are an independent library we can’t accept Camden Library cards.

July 2021 Update:

Thank you so much to all of our patrons for your patience! We are now open for you to use the children’s library, work and read on our desks and sofas, and use our computers. We hope to reintroduce our children’s and adults’ activities when we can. For now, we are continuing our community activities with online events and workshops, our newsletter, and the community booklending scheme.

The Children’s Library is available for general use at certain times:
Mondays 2:30pm-6pm,
Tuesdays 4:30pm-6pm
Wednesdays 12pm-6pm
At busy times we may ask you to limit your visit to 30 minutes, or to read together in the sofa area instead.

You can use our computers for 1 hour at a time. Please talk to a librarian in advance if you need to use a computer for longer.
Printing and photocopying is available: 10p per page black and white, 30p per page colour.

The Adult Library is open for Browsing and Borrowing:
Mondays and Tuesdays 10am to 6pm, Wednesdays 12pm-8pm.
There is now no limit on the time you can spend reading or working in the adults’ library, though at busier times we may ask you to limit your visit to 1 hour.

We are continuing our Request and Read service. Email us with a book request and we will do our best to get it into your hands!

Please wear a mask when you come to the library, unless you have a recognised exemption. We have plenty of hand sanitiser and clean down the space during the day. If you are unable to sign in using the NHS Covid-19 app, we will ask you to provide your name and contact number for contact tracing purposes.

Please see our social media for updates on all our activities and all our plans for future events.

We Read

We run lots of activities here but most importantly we are still a library. We have a range of classic and exciting new books for all ages. Whatever your interest, there’s something to read and we loan around 130 books per month. Maybe it’s your first reading experience or you’re just learning. You might be an adult who wants to discover new authors. We invite you to do that here – we’ve got lots of books to help you on your reading journey.

If you aren’t yet ready to spend time in the library, you can request a book from us through email and pick it up from us at our front door.

The Belsize Community Library welcomes children and families. However, on Wednesdays from 12-3pm we have quiet time to let our readers get into their books without too much noise to distract them.

We Create

All our visitors can be creative and it’s fun! Come and explore what you can do to develop your creative potential. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never done it before – you could learn new skills. We welcome everyone of all ages to take a break from your normal routine, step inside the library and find yourself something creative to learn and love.

We are still hosting live-streamed community assemblies, Between the Books concerts, and an online “office hours” for entrepreneurs to develop their businesses. We are continuing to run our open mic sessions online and would be delighted to see you there!

We Connect

Although we’re unable to hold workshops and social events indoors, just coming to the library can be a real mood booster!

We are running a programme of “Belsize Online” events to keep the community connected in this time of physical distancing. Why not tune in to watch a Friends of Belsize Library author talk, join our Book Club, or take part in Bojana’s online community yoga classes?

We rely on volunteers to help keep us open and it’s a wonderful opportunity for you to make a difference in the local community. If you’re interested in volunteering, you can pop in to speak to our Library Manager to find out how you can get involved.
