Welcome to Belsize Community Library, your space to read, create and connect.

In 2012 The Winch took over the Belsize Community Library from Camden Council, who were on the verge of closing it down. It was clearly important to keep it as a library, so that’s exactly what The Winch has done. Today it is still the beautiful Belsize Park space that it has been since it was built in 1937. We have kept it open and welcoming to everyone in the local community and beyond!

Become a Member. Becoming a member is easy and free. You can do it in person at the library or you can download and fill in this form here. Make sure you bring proof of address to the library with you and, as soon as you have your membership number, you can borrow books, reserve or renew them, use our computers and more.

As we are an independent library we can’t accept Camden Library cards.

BELSIZE RECOMMENDS: while we can’t open for patrons to read inside the library, we still want to make our lovely collection accessible to the community! We are offering a community booklending scheme called “Belsize Recommends”. Just email our library team and give us a sense of what kind of book you’re after, and we will make up a package of recommended books for you, which you will be able to pick up on a Monday between 11am and 5pm.

January 2021 Update: Happy New Year!

Thank you so much to all of our patrons who have been supporting us during this time of constant change. We miss having you in the library and we are looking forward to a future where we can open properly to the Belsize community again. The place just isn’t the same without you!

The library has reopened for book collection and drop-off on Mondays only, between 11am and 5pm. Please wear a mask when you come to collect or return your books! We will be continuing our community activities in the new year with online events and workshops, our newsletter, and the community booklending scheme. Please see our social media for updates on all our activities and all our plans for future events. We will be delighted to welcome patrons back as soon as we can!

We Read

We run lots of activities here but most importantly we are still a library. We have a range of classic and exciting new books for all ages. Whatever your interest, there’s something to read and we loan around 130 books per month. Maybe it’s your first reading experience or you’re just learning. You might be an adult who wants to discover new authors. We invite you to do that here – we’ve got lots of books to help you on your reading journey.

The Belsize Community Library welcomes children and families. However, from 12-3pm we have quiet time to let our readers get into their books without too much noise to distract them.

We Create

All our visitors can be creative and it’s fun! Come and explore what you can do to develop your creative potential. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never done it before – you could learn new skills. We welcome everyone of all ages to take a break from your normal routine, step inside the library and find yourself something creative to learn and love.

We are still hosting live-streamed community assemblies, Between the Books concerts, and an online “office hours” for entrepreneurs to develop their businesses. We are continuing to run our open mic sessions online and would be delighted to see you there!

We Connect

Although we’re unable to hold workshops and social events indoors, just coming to the library can be a real mood booster!

We are running a programme of “Belsize Online” events to keep the community connected in this time of physical distancing. Why not tune in to watch a Friends of Belsize Library author talk, join our Book Club, or take part in Bojana’s online community yoga classes?

We rely on volunteers to help keep us open and it’s a wonderful opportunity for you to make a difference in the local community. If you’re interested in volunteering, you can pop in to speak to our Library Manager to find out how you can get involved.
